Where do I begin?

Every journey has to begin somewhere. When that journey is the ever present topic of health it gets confusing, quickly. So what is health you may ask. I wish that I had the answer for you, but because we are all different,
so is our individual view of health. Obviously there are specific benchmarks that the doctors look for to declare us healthy or not. But with that being said, if I feel healthy and like I am in control of my health I am much happier.

Before I dive too much into this topic, let me introduce myself and why I am so passionate about health and wellness.  My name is Adam Kuchin and I have spent the better part of my adult years seeking understanding and education in the realm of health and wellness. Growing up I was the kid that played every sport and activity that my parents would let me. I really began to want to understand the mechanisms and research behind health and wellness my Senior year of high school when I helped to coach the Junior High basketball team. I took two years off from my formal education to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand. Upon returning I began studying Exercise and Wellness at Brigham Young University with the goal of becoming a Personal trainer and Health coach. Through my education path I took courses based in worksite wellness programs and personal training as well as anatomy and physiology. During the course of my Junior and Senior years at BYU I decided to pursue post-graduate work as a Physical Therapist.  I transferred to small school in Montana with my wife and began preparing myself for the post-graduate path. I then attended a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in Southern California where after much consideration I decided that Physical Therapy was not the path for me. Since leaving the program and moving back to Montana I have been considering how I could best use my education to help those around me to obtain "Their Ideal Health".

So what is Health? What I consider health for myself is different from what my wife would call health for her. Let's look at a few examples of what health can be to different people.

1) A young man who enjoys playing sports and is seeking a career path that requires a certain level of fitness (ie. Law Enforcement, Military, Firefighting, etc.) may consider his healthy state as being able to complete a 2 mile run in under 12 minutes, or do 50 push-ups in 2 minutes.🚒

2) A Retiree who enjoys traveling, fishing, and watching TV may consider their healthy state as being able to walk each day to see the sights and sounds of each new adventure without being too tired to go out the next day. Or being able to go out for a day of fishing where they might have to hike up to a mountain reservoir.

3) An elderly grandparent who would like to be able to walk without a cane and be able to enjoy time and activities with their young (great) Grand children.

4) A young mother who would like to have the energy and mindset to be able to keep up with the ever growing needs of a young family, while not losing her own sanity.

5) A young father who enjoys running and would like to continue to improve on a limited training schedule on his race times.

These are just a few examples of the differences that make up what each of us sees as our healthy state. Each of us has our own unique personalities to go with our goals. So you might be asking how can a general wellness program help so many individuals with such varying interests/goals reach "Their Ideal Health".

One thing I have seen again and again is that there is NO magic pill. What works for one person may not work for their spouse, but the key is to try.  The biggest key to personal health is not hiring the right person or spending the most money (we will talk about the worth of health in a later post) but in committing to something and sticking it out. No one ever finished a marathon by running the 1st mile and saying "I can't see the finish line, so I quit." Just like in life you may not be able to see the end from the beginning but you won't reach retirement unless you push forward and give it your best shot.  Just like anything worthwhile our health is not an overnight success, we must work at it and celebrate the small victories that lead to the change we are seeking.

My goal is to enable you to reach "Your Ideal Health" But we cannot do that by doing the same things we are already doing!
